Very, very rarely do I find books that I want to bother rereading. There are so many books in this world that I need to read, there is no way I can possibly live long enough to fit ‘em all in. (Lucky for me I have extremely good eyesight-even too good eyesight- so hopefully I will keep my vision long enough to be able to read more than if I had regular eyesight. If only my brain holds out and I don’t go senile too soon. Which the forecast on that issue ain’t lookin’ too good, let me tell ya.) Anyway, back to the books. When I was young I used to reread “Black Beauty” and “Call of the Wild” over and over. Of course, the Anne of Green Gables books need to be reread. Every couple of months I get in the mood for Jane Austin and I reread one of her novels.
Over the last few days I have started to learn something and it’s that the Harry Potter series is even better the second time around! So, as I work my way through year two at Hogwarts once again, I decided to take a break and talk about Harry Potter for awhile. You would think that after my last Harry Potter blog, which was like 6 pages long on Word before I copied and pasted it onto myspace, that I would have said all I had to say about it. Turns out that I have not!
Can you believe that some people don’t even like Harry Potter!?!?! How can that even be possible!? They surely haven’t read them at all! JK Rowlings has to be one of the greatest writers of our time, if not the greatest. I know one thing that people don’t like about her books is that sometimes the kids in the book break the rules, and then don’t get punished for it, or they will even get rewarded instead. I have a few things to say on that subject. First of all, it is a true observation and I don’t deny it. I think there are a couple of reasons that Rowling does this. One of those reasons is that she is writing from the perspective of a humanist. So, that is going to affect her writing to at least some degree.
Another reason that I believe Rowlings does this, is that it’s a literary decision. I feel like this kind of situation pops up more in the earlier books, when the kids are younger. The situations are used to show us the personality of the characters who do the rewarding or punishing (the teachers at Hogwarts). Hey, don’t all schools have the “mean teacher”, the “nice teacher”, the “push over teacher”, the “boring teacher”. The lack of punishment is just used to show which teacher is which. And it goes even deeper, because these books cover a very long period time in these people lives, their growing up years. By the end of the books, the kids and readers are faced with the job of deciding just what kind of person these people were. In other words, Snape was the “mean teacher” as far as the kids were concerned, but by the end of the book, we learn he was a hero. Remember, in the early books especially, our perception of the teachers is coming from the perspective of young children. Anyway, I don’t think I am saying this in the best way possible, but maybe you got my idea.
Usually when the kids are rewarded for doing wrong, it is because they have been faced with a really tough decision, and decided to break the rules in order to save the day. Do we want our children emulate them? I don’t know, I don’t imagine that there will be very many times that they are faced with the same situation.
It is not too often that they will be warned to stay off the 3rd floor, because it will bring certain death, and they will have to decide to break the rules because they have reason to believe that someone is going to steal the Sorcery’s Stone, and bring Voldemort back to power, putting the whole Wizarding World and even the Muggle World in certain danger. I also don’t think that they will have to enter as Chamber of Secrets that was built and enchanted by an angry, dark wizard who didn’t want any “Mudbloods” or “Squibs” to go to their school, in order to save the life of a sister/friend who is in mortal danger from a basilisk. Harry and friends were rewarded for breaking rules, because they broke rules in order to save lives, and they saved the day. And if you really want to get to the details, in Book 1, Neville was rewarded the mostin the end, because he stood up to his friends who were breaking the rules!
Something I notice that the naysayers seem to forget about the Harry Potter books is that not only do they sometimes get out of punishment and/or rewarded for breaking the rules, but they also sometimes get punished, or lectured, or nearly punished for things they didn’t do, for things that other people did, or just unfairly punished in generally. I also notice that situations such as these occur more and more in the later books, or in other words when the kids are older. There comes a time in our lives when we must all learn that life isn’t always fair, and the Harry Potter characters had to learn this fact, too. I notice that especially in book five, this fact is just drilled into the minds of Harry and his friends. Harry is punished over and over, unfairly, unjustly, and just really horribly in book 5. Book 5 is filled with examples of people, who shouldn’t be in power or control of things, gaining power by abusing the law. Umbridge gains control of Hogwarts by twisting the “Wizarding” laws to her own advantage. Then she uses a dishonest, sensationalized media in order to trick people into following her.
When teaching, Professor Umbridge even abuses her position of teacher to teach the kids a Ministry of Magic and Umbridge favorable curriculum. She teaches just enough to try and gain obedience from the kids, and not enough that the kids are able to learn how to protect themselves when needed. Harry and his friends decide that learning the truth is more important than following the rules, and they use a hidden room in the castle to conduct their own classes and learn what they need to know. You know, Hitler said, “Give me the schools, and you will give me the country”. Don’t we want our children to learn that a really good, education, where we are learning truth and not lies is important if they want to keep their inalienable rights? Of course we do! And I think that this book gives an excellent opportunity to teach kids about this. It is so well done! Rowling does an amazing job of creating the Umbridge character and the News Reporter (I can’t remember her name off the top of my head). On the surface, Umbridge seems like a harmless, little person, she has a small voice. If you were going on appearances, she would seem like a nice, little, old lady. But she is really a tricky dangerous snake! Such a great example of how appearances can be deceiving and cause us to let down our guard. Also, I would like to note that the crisis in the beginning of the book (Harry and Dudley being attacked by dementors, and Harry having to break the law of “Underage Magic Restrictions” in order to save Dudley’s life.) was all set up by Umbridge in order to catch Harry breaking the law and get him expelled from Hogwarts. Many times people who take control of a government will use crisis situations that they set up themselves, for that purposes of gaining control and bending circumstances in their favor. It is just TOO COOL that Rowlings was able to create this whole imagined world, filled with hundreds of such well-written characters in order to address actual situations that we face every day! Now that is good writing, in the likes of Lewis Carroll, L. Frank Braum, and CS Lewis!!!
So, Rowlings doesn’t think it is good to break the rules, but she also knows that sometimes we have to break rules, or go against the norm in order to do what is right. There are Christians in different parts of the world who give out Bibles & witness when it is against the rules. There are Christians that who worship in hiding because they don’t have the right to worship Christ in the countries where they live. They break the rules, bravely so they can serve the Lord. Today, there are homeschoolers all over Germany who are fighting against rules in their country that say that they cannot educate their own children in the way that they believe is the best for them. Finally, if it weren’t for breaking rules, the United States of America would never have existed. When you are talking about rules, that were made by man- who is not perfect- (I am not talking about laws that are given to us by God, i.e.- The 10 Commandments), well, sometimes man makes rules that are just morally wrong. And as Dumbledore says, “Someday we all have to choose between doing what is right and doing what is easy."

Mondays, with some recipes...
I am so lazy on Monday's I couldn't even finish my blog post until now! What a dork! But hey, when your sissy drops by after her doc. appt. and your waiting to see when she is going to have your niece, you get a little too busy for blogging, and I have to note that even though this blog contains a lot of whining, skip on past it, because I am going to share some great recipes.....
I hate Mondays so much! After all the work that Sundays are with Olympians and church, I am exhausted EVERY single Monday. And yet I still have tons of work to do for the whole week! Plus, I am usually excited about how the Olympian Club went, and it makes me want to get to work on the next week's Olympian club right away. But I am just too stinkin' lazy to get much done on Mondays.
The other day, I made my facebook status that I was roasting a chicken. Since then tons of people keep asking me how the chicken was. So, I thought I would share one of the best things I have ever, ever, ever found. I found mine at the Covered Bridge Festival, and it is a glazed stoneware, I don't know if the one from Taste of Home is as good, but I do know they sell one. It actually looks a little bigger then mine so maybe it is even better. It is called the Ceramic Chicken Cooker and here is a picture of it....
I found this one at the following website... http://www.countrystorecatalog.com/. They should totally like send me a gift certificate for this free advertising. But all you do is fill the little cup part (where the chicken butt is placed) with whatever kind of flavoring you are wanting to add to the chicken. Like you could fill the cup with barbecue sauce, or something I like to add is a mixture of juice from a lemon-a little chicken broth or water- a shake of lemon pepper, shake of Shoup's seasoning, some parsley, and pressed garlic. But really you could add whatever you like on chicken. Here is an idea, I found on a recipe card lately, and I am planning on trying, you could fill the cup with..melted butter, 1/2 tsp. dried sage, 1 clove garlic-crushed, 1/2 tsp. dried rosemary, 1/2 tsp. olive oil, 1/2 tsp of fresh parsley- all snipped up (make sure you use the Italian parsley, not the kind for garnish, the Italian kind has better flavor), and then enough chicken broth to fill the cup. Once you have filled the cup with whatever you choose, then you just wash off/out your chicken, clean out the insides, stick that butt on the cup, and bake it at 350 for 2 hours. This makes the best chicken ever, no matter what you put in the cup!! And the best part is, I spend 10-15 minutes preparing it to be in the oven, then a few minutes right before it is taken out of the oven preparing some sides, and the rest of the time, I can read!!! My favorite kind of cooking! Also, the pan collects tons of broth, which you can pour out and make gravy with, or save for a really nice chicken soup depending on what kind of seasoning you put in the cup.
Also, I like to make this recipe of potatoes with it. I just add them to the oven when there is a little less then a hour of baking time left. First, you peel and cut up some potatoes. The size I cut them depends on how long I have to bake them, the smaller the cut- the shorter the baking time. I line the bottom of a baking dish (I like to do this recipe with Pampered Chef Stoneware -it bakes them just right!). Then I put a stick of butter in the microwave and melt it. Once it is melted I stir pressed garlic, a little shake of salt, or a little Shoup's seasoning (the best seasoning for any recipe, I bet it would even make chocolate chip cookies better- Okay, I am just being sarcastic, nothing is needed to make chocolate chip cookies better, esp. if they are baked by Stella or Bekah.- And there is the fact that there is like garlic powder and pepper and stuff in Shoup's seasoning.) Next I add a little Parmesan cheese. Mix all that up with a fork and pour it over the potatoes, turn them a little to coat them all around. Shake some more Parmesan cheese on top of all that and just bake it. The extra shake of Parmesan at the end, makes nice, bubbly, browned outsides and the insides are warm, soft, and garlicy. Yummy, Yummy. By the way, you can get Shoup's Seasoning from http://www.shoupscountry.com/ .
Okay, now I like totally think that I deserve a free hog from Shoup's, too, or maybe like 10% off my next hog, lol. Actually, if I put every recipe I use Shoup's on in this blog, not only would it take forever to read, but they would like owe me free hogs for life, or something. Come to think of it, maybe I should just put every recipe on here, free hogs for life doesn't sound too bad. I am totally serious about Shoup's, it is like the BEST seasoning ever. I put it in so many recipes, some recipes less, some more, and it tastes different with each food I use it with. It really is almost like it just enhances the food's natural flavor so nicely or something.
Onto another topic, I love reading about Queen Victoria. I am trying to read this book that is excerpts from her journals and letters. Only this book is SO old that pretty much everytime I turn a page it falls right out of the book!!!! I am like on page 182, and I have like 182 pages sitting on the table that fell right out. I know I should just stop reading it and bring it to the library, but I really want to read the rest. I am so going to have to pay the replacement costs of this book, and I am not all excited to hear how much that is going to cost. Just now, I read about Prince Albert dying. Oh my, how sad it is! I just want to cry!! I did have tears. They were such a romance. Although the romanticness of their story is a little tainted by the fact that they were first cousins. I mean, I know back then it was done, and not unusual really, but still the thought makes me want to puke. She loved Albert so much though. She called him her "Perfect, Beautiful Angel". (I did look up pictures of him, to see if he really was that beautiful, and I will admit, he was pretty nice-looking for those days.) She fell in love with his blue eyes, which I can understand, Jerrid's blue eyes are AMAZING! Blue eyes are the BEST! After Prince Albert died, everything she did no longer held any joy for her, because her "Perfect Beautiful Angel" wasn't with her. Even like when new grandchildren were born, or their kids got married, or had birthdays, it was so bittersweet because he wasn't there to share it with her. She really didn't know how to cope without him in every area of her life, because relied on his advice for everything. He even adviced her on what dresses and hats to wear. He wasn't an overbearing, controlling husband, like it may sound, it was just that she loved him so greatly that she wanted his thoughts on everything she did. I can't imagine what she felt like. I doubt that I would do well without Jerrid, we have been best friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, or married, ever since I was 15 and he was 16. I might feel like Queen Victoria did if I lost him. I know that even not having Grandpa and Grandma Eastwood with us at Christmas-time is a little sad. I always miss them, they loved Christmas and made every single Christmas the most special Christmas ever. I hope that if I did get in that situation I would remember that "the joy of the Lord is my strength" and even without Jerrid, I would be able to find joy.
By the way, I want to tell you about this SUPER awesome blog, that Mike's cousin writes, if you are a Mom, especially if you are mom who loves to save money, you totally have to check it out!

Random Things
I am reading a book about Anne Boleyn, not a novel, but an actual like history book, one that is trying to give facts. It is really starting to get boring though, because it pretty much says, "Scholars think this, and that about Anne. Caution must be observed when believing this and that about Anne, because extant evidence tells us this and that, and this and that, so we can probably surmise this and that." (This is repeated paragraph after paragraph) Basically the author is saying; that people try to describe what Anne looked like in great detail, but since they didn't have Kodak in the 1500s, we don't really know for sure what she looked like. People try to describe what kind of personality she was, but since there aren't that many people that are still alive today, that may have known her in the 1500s, we don't really know for sure what kind of person she was. Some people think that the people who accused her were lying and some people think she was lying, but since they didn't have lie detector tests in the 15oos, we really don't know who was telling the truth about what. Why can't he just get to the point, tell only the facts he does know, you know the ones we can learn from "extant evidence" (I am getting really sick of reading the words "extant evidence"!) and then I could get done reading this boring book?? When I told Jerrid and Diane this they wondered why I am bothering to read it. I just want to learn as much of the truth about history as I can, but the 1500s was a long time ago, so apparently where Anne Boleyn is concerned, I am not going to learn a lot.
I have managed to learn something from this book already though. I don't care how much the author tries to defend King Henry VIII, saying that he was only driven by personal religious conviction when he divorced or cut his wive's heads off. I know for sure the guy was just a self-righteous jerk, who blamed his inability to give birth to a son on his wives and mistresses. I mean biology and Science have now taught us that it is the man who gives the X or Y chromosome. So no matter how many wives or concubines he blamed on his problems, deep down it was the mans fault. Typical.
I can't believe how anxious I am for Bekah to have her baby! It is so cool that my little, baby sister is going to have a baby. I look at her and still think of her standing in her playpen and me trying to teach her to talk. Mom told me that babies learned to talk by people talking to them. So I would just choose a random words and then sit next to her playpen and say the word over and over and over, until she learned to say it. Her first word was hi, second hat. Like I said, random words.
I also remember when Tracy came to babysit one time and she was putting Bekah to bed. I think Bekah must have been about 6 months old. I quietly snuck in behind Tracy and I remember watching Tracy laying Bekah down in her crib, and then giving Bekah a bottle. Then Tracy whispered, "Good Night, Bekah". So, I just said in a quiet voice, "Good Night". Then Tracy screamed bloody murder, thinking Bekah was talking back to her.
I also remember when Bekah was about 6 weeks old, Mom brought her to my school and showed her to the other kids in my class. All the kids wanted to hold her, and so Mom told them they could. They all stood in a line and Mom went down the line, and they "held" her. Mom never took her hands off Bekah, but me being the 1st grader, big sister, protector that I was, I was SUPER angry at Mom for letting all those kids hold her. I was sure that they would drop her or get her dirty or something. She was just so cute, it would have been horrible if they got her dirty. (I remember thinking that).
I remember one Halloween when we lived in Illinois. They were having some kind of Halloween/Costume party at the library in town, so Peggy and I dressed Bekah up like a clown. I don't remember what clothes we put her in. But I do remember the costume involving very, very large amounts of odd colors of makeup being slathered all over Bekah's face. Her hair being pulled up in rubber band until it stuck straight up on the top of her head. And some orange hair spray being sprayed on said ponytail. Later I remember Peggy's sister, Jennifer, saying that she felt sorry for the poor kid when she saw her.
I remember for many years, I was excited when school got out and I could just go home and play with my baby sister. That didn't last though because after awhile, I got older, she got older, and then she just seemed annoying. (And I was likely a brat.)

What To Do When A Book is Too Good to Put Down....
What do you do when you are reading a book and it is just SOOOOOO good that you can't put it down, and you just HAVE to know how it's going to end? Especially when you have 3 kids and husband who have things that they want you to do for them.
Here are few suggestions;
Read while your internet is connecting (If you have dial-up)
Read while your page is loading (If you have dial-up)
Read while you are talking on the phone (If the person you are talking to is boring. Just be sure to say Yeah, and Uh-uh everynow and then.)
Read with one hand while you stir dinner with other.
Read with one hand while you load the dishwasher with the other hand.
Read with one hand while you put your socks and shoes on with other hand.
Read with one hand while you water your garden with the other hand.
Read with one hand while you start laundry with the other hand.
Read while you are cutting veggies for dinner. Simple take two glasses, and various pieces of silverware sticking up inside the glasses, and fix your book to stand up, or lay your book on the table, and hold it open with a remote control, or the phone. (Then you can talk to the boring person, cut veggies, and read all the same time, just remember to keep saying Yeah and Uh-uh.) Read while watching Soap Operas, simply watch only the interesting characters and read during commercials. (You can finish the book REALLY fast this way!)
Read while watching American Idol, simply read while they sing and during commercials. (Only stop when the judges talk, and Ryan annouces the winner, you can still hear them sing while reading, you are only missing Ryan saying, "We'll find out after this break brought to you by Coke," and the judges are the best part anyway.)
Read while going to the bathroom.
Read while taking a long bath. NOT jk, Moms need long bubble baths on a regular basis.
Read while my Dad is preaching, jk, Dad, I would never do that, unless I was reading the Bible.
